2010 PRELIMINARY COMPETITION JUDGING CRITERIA

1. Entertainment value (overall of performance) 1-5 points
o How absorbing and entertaining was the performance
o Audience reaction (applause)

2. Intonation and pitch control 1-10 points
o Awareness of the intended key and mode
o How accurately does the singer harmonize with the music
o Use of vibrato (often over used)
o Strength and range of voice

3. Expression 1-10 points
o The use of phrasing (starting and stopping nicely)
o Articulation (understandable words)
o Dynamics (loud and soft)
o Tonal color variation (smoothly here, gravelly there)

4. Tempo and rhythm 1-10 points
o How well does the performer stay in tempo
o Duration of the notes (holding notes too long or not long enough)
o Awareness of the rhythmic style of the piece
o Staccato and legato sung correctly

5. Stage presence 1-5 points
o Facial expression and body gestures
o Command of the audience through eye contact, etc.
o Appearance of confidence and relaxation on stage

 

2010 GENERAL RULES AND GUIDELINES

1. Contestants must be of correct age to enter the venue. You must be a minimum age of 21 years by contest preliminary and final dates. You will need a valid ID at all venues.
2. This contest is limited to solo vocal entertainers. No duets or groups.
3. Contestants’ performances will be scored by a panel of judges. All judges’ decisions are final.
4. Before the contestants compete, they must accept and sign the terms of competition waiver which will be available at the registration table of each preliminary event.
5. Contestants must be present to advance to the final round. This means contestants must wait until winners are announced at the end of each preliminary performance.
6. Advancing contestants are encouraged to bring family, friends and fans to subsequent rounds of Encore Superstar.
7. Encore Superstar events will be considered family friendly shows. The use of profanity, while not forbidden is strongly discouraged.
8. Leaving the stage area during a performance is not prohibited, but contestant should be aware it does make it difficult for the judges, cameras and audience to follow.
9. We don’t mind song duplications. But if we see duplication, we will give you the option to change before the show. You will not be required to change.
10. Only a limited number of performers will be allowed to participate, be sure to get there early to sign up. This is a first come, first serve sign up event. Registration begins at 7 pm with the competition beginning promptly at 8 pm. Roughly 30-40 contestants will be eligible to sing per preliminary event. The number of singers will likely vary from competition to competition.
11. Four finalists will be chosen at each preliminary venue. These sixteen finalists will compete at the final competition.
12. Professional singers, DJ’s, KJ’s, previous Encore Superstar winners, and employees and family members of Telegraph Publishing Co., Perfect Entertainment and our judges are not eligible to compete. Radio DJ’s will be allowed to participate.
13. Participants who have not already been chosen to advance to the final round may compete at more than one venue. The registration fee at each preliminary is $5.
14. The Telegraph reserves the right to change these guidelines.
15. Final competitors should note that there will be no monitors available at the final competition. Finalists are urged to memorize their lines.
16. Contestants should come prepared with two memorized songs for the final competition. There will be two rounds: one, which all sixteen will sing and another, which the top three will sing. A winner will be chosen from the top three.

Tickets for the final show, held on Friday, March 26, will be sold at each of the preliminary rounds, at the Telegraph's Hudson office, lcoated at 17 Executive Drive, and online. Tickets are $5. (Please note that tickets sold at the Telegraph office and at the preliminary rounds will be cash only, if you have a credit card, please purchase your tickets online.) A portion of the proceeds from the final competition will benefit the Peacock Players.

 

2010 FINAL COMPETITION JUDING CRITERIA AND RULES

Check-In Time: Finalists should arrive and check-in with Telegraph staff by 7 pm. The competition will begin promptly at 8 pm.

Songs: Finalists should be prepared with two songs that can be performed by memory as no monitors with words will be available.

DJ: DJ Bernie D will be our DJ for the evening. Upon your arrival that evening you will want to check in with Bernie. It would be preferable if you send Bernie your song choices in advance. If every finalist does so, this could alleviate any song duplications at the last minute.

Emcee: Mike Morin from WZID will be our emcee for the evening. Be prepared for him to ask you a few questions onstage regarding the competition.

Appearance: At the final competition your appearance will be taken into consideration by the judges. You will want your outfit to enhance your stage presence and not be a distraction.

Prizes: Grand prize for the 2010 Encore Superstar includes but may not be limited to $1,00 cash prize, cover story and photo in Encore publication and the chance to sing at a 2010 NH Fisher Cats game. Second prize receives $500 cash prize and third place receives $250 cash prize.

Tickets: We will be charging an admission of $5.00 for those guests attending the final (there is no charge for participants). You have been given two complimentary tickets to give to your supporters. Please tell other friends and family members that they can purchase tickets in advance at The Telegraph offices or purchase tickets at the door. Address: 17 Executive Drive, Hudson, NH, 03051. In the past we have had some issues with seating. We have made arrangements to have more seating available, but please let your supporters know to arrive early.

Identification: Boston Billiard Club will only admit individuals who are 21 years of age and older into the final event. The staff will ask everyone seeking admittance to show proper identification, even if they are obviously well beyond 21 years of age. Please inform your supporters to be prepared.
